What is the difference between the Retail and the Institutional Division of Fidelity/TD Ameritrade?

Retail investors are individual investors, investing on their own behalf on a self-directed platform. Institutional investors are businesses or advisors making investment decisions on behalf of a group of individuals. FutureAdvisor is an institutional investor.

Fidelity and TD Ameritrade’s institutional platforms support FutureAdvisor’s trading activity and the management of our clients’ accounts. The institutional side of their business is separate from the service they provide to individuals who open up accounts in their own name and wish to trade directly in their accounts.

As a FutureAdvisor client, you will get the best service experience by requesting anything you need (cash requests, beneficiary designations, etc.) through us, and we will work with the institutional teams at Fidelity and TD Ameritrade to get it completed.
